where to find molliedash jewelry

hey kids!

as you might have noticed, there are a lot of changes going on behind the scenes at molliedash/ everbrite mercantile co. Since we opened the store roughly a month ago, it has necessitated some logistical adjustments. so for now, I've placed my website under construction. it was bugging me to hell, having it a mish-mosh of styles, with out of date information, and no time to work on it. I might be moving some of the merchandise over to the ebmerc site so watch out for that. if you're in brooklyn or thinking of coming to brooklyn, my collection can be found in the everbrite brick and mortar store in red hook. or at Old Hollywood in Greenpoint and Chelsea.

originally I was thinking to have two separate business running, but now I see that it just doesn't make sense. plus, I just don't have the time to run them that way. this involves more than websites and blogs- it has to do with bank accounts and record keeping also.

the question of keeping this blog running is also on my mind. most of my posts lately have been everbrite related, so merging the two into one blog is something we're considering.

for now we're heavily into holiday preparations for the store- ordering, ordering, ordering. then a new window display to be revealed for black friday, and the challenge of putting out all the new merch, pricing it, putting it into inventory, etc.

but be prepared- our first month in the store was great and we are stocking WAY back up for the holidays. we'll have more of your favorites such as vintage-inspired Playforever toys, animal shot glasses from Goody Grams and loopy metal home accessories from Black+Blum. Look for new colors and designs from these great lines, as well as all-new creations from Emily Rothschild and Pop Chart Lab.

new pieces

Pink Tassel Necklace. I love to take chain tassels apart and put them back together, improved. Here I've replaced the base metal wire with lovely copper wraps that have been antiqued and polished. The tassel is hung on pink vintage Japanese chain. Seriously.

I found a use for this bracelet chain of copper diamonds. (I was stashing it away in all honesty.) A weird thing happens when you buy vintage to sell- some pieces tug at you and are hard to part with. Like you're never going to find anything like it again! So here I've made it into a little charm bracelet. The tiny charm that's hiding is a Finnish penny. (penni)

This pendant was a brooch- the tassels hang in slight graduation.

Chunky Amber cuff links. They were sitting in my "to polish" pile for many months. When the weather got nice I brought a big batch out back and went at them with the dremel and tripoli. The findings are made from Alpaca, a metal alloy used to mimic sterling silver. They fooled me to the point that I almost listed them as sterling, until I noticed the hallmark stamp.

Mary Brooch. These little vintage pieces amaze me. Names and such are spelled out in a single piece of square wire, ending in the pin back. They're usually backed by shell, and this one is carved to look like a pair of kissing love birds.

feeling graphic-y

hey, you might have noticed some janky behavior on my home page's slide show. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I decided to go back to a static image and started working on it last night. here it is so far...

after christmas sale

hey kids, we've marked some items down on the ebmerc site. we'll have some new designs coming after the holidays, including a metal version of the world links necklace. and there are many new designers for me to sift through and place orders with. we made the rounds of the many holiday craft/ indie design shows that were taking place around town and found some really cool stuff. after our initial launch and inventory selection, it's a good time for us hone in on what we want to sell and refine the collection.

and while you're at it, check out the pieces I have on sale at the molliedash shop.

crazy busy

hey folks!

you know those people- who can run a successful business and also have fun, engaging blogs that are updated every day or so? yeah...I'm not one of them.

oh man, I can't begin to explain the amount of work that's been on my plate. all of the details involved in launching everbrite mercantile company have run well into the fall, leaving molliedash.com sorely neglected. when my assistant felecia left in the spring to have her baby, I left the position unfilled. things got pretty slow sales-wise and it didn't make sense at the time to hire someone to make more jewelry. so b and I plugged on through the spring and summer going to trade shows and weekend craft markets looking for vendors. I started ordering products, photographing and editing them, uploading the photos and descriptions to the database, and weighing and measuring them for shipping calculations. b spent many, many hours writing the code for the site, debugging it on various browsers and operating systems, and figuring out shipping formulas. together we designed the interface and consulted on many details and decisions. by august we had postcards printed and previewed the shop at the brooklyn flea. in october we launched the website.

some time in the spring I was contacted by a literary agent who had an idea for a book and was interested in having me write it. it seemed like a great opportunity and b was fully behind me doing it. I met with the agent a few times and put together a proposal with her help. but knowing that we were launching a new online shop and that fall and holiday would be coming soon enough (my busiest time for jewelry) made it hard to focus on writing the proposal. the process of submission and re-writes was starting to stretch out longer than appropriate, and the agent finally asked me if this was something I really wanted to work on. yes, maybe at another time, but no, not right now. (the agent did continue to look for another author, so I'll let you know the title if and when it gets published)

okay, so back to focusing on a fall line and getting the website updated. always ideas for how the site can look and function better. so as it's november and it's getting kinda late, I contacted felecia to see if she would like to do a bit of pick-up work. and thankfully, she did. now we are cranking through some new pieces with her amazing speed. I did hire an intern who started in early october, and she's been helping me with other aspects of the business. I was contacted in the summer by amy of brooklyn design lab about teaching a class there. each teacher is invited to do a window installation, and my intern has been much help in putting this project together. (I install it this friday, yo!) about a week ago, in the midst of my too-much-to-do freak out, I told b that I really, really, need to get the site updated. so he sat down and worked his magic on it for a few days, and it's almost ready to launch.

so yeah, not out of the woods yet. but getting close.

new shop sections

so, we did it! something that's been on my mind for a while, introducing collections to the website, happened this weekend. first up, the classic collection.

the classic collection contains everything you've grown to love from molliedash- vintage pieces incorporated into modern designs.

inspired by fashion's revisiting of african prints this year, I came up with the summer collection. I noticed some stylish folks around nyc throwing raw strands of african glass beads around their necks to compliment the trend. so I thought, why not work those into some new designs? I'll be fleshing the collection out in the next couple of weeks.

then we have the vintage collection. some pieces are simply too good to cut apart and make into something new. they're perfectly good as-is, and make great compliments to my more contemporary designs.

and finally we have everyone's favorite, the sale section. here pieces will be marked 30-50% down from retail.

as soon as I have a chance, I will be adjusting the shipping rates to coincide with some of the lower-priced items on the site. and...while doing the update, b added a second way of navigating the site. click on the little grid to view. and so, enjoy.

new stuff

I just uploaded a few of the new items I've been teasing you with. they're part of a larger scheme site update, but I figured I'd just get them up there while I'm working on it. the update involves introducing collections- something I've had on my mind for a while. the classic collection of mostly metal jewelry will continue. alongside I will introduce other categories, the first of which is this summer batch of african-inspired work. and to try something new, there will be a section of finished vintage jewelry. I come across so much stuff that is perfectly good as-is, and not in need of being repurposed. I love wearing vintage jewelry in combination with my own work, so maybe you will too. and for you MENS out there, I have a great little stash of things for you: cuff links, tie tacks and rings. oh yeah, don't think you're too cool to wear jewelry, cause you're not. so go on and check out the new stuff and the complete site will be updated in just a few days.

what's a trunk show?

that's a question I was asked by a very nice couple strolling the neighborhood in greenpoint yesterday who spotted the sandwich board out front. they came in as a gentleman was deciding on a necklace from my new collection, a birthday gift for his wife. he said that she liked this shop, as well as those along franklin street. one that sounded like Horn and Hardart. I thought about what he said for a minute as the conversation moved to other topics. then it came to me- "Hayden-Harnett?" I asked him. "Yes, that's right," he said. then the neighborhood visitor chimed in- "you two look too young to remember Horn and Hardart." I explained that I didn't remember the home of the automat myself, but that my dad, who grew up in philly, often reminisced about it. the customer said that he moved to new york in 1984, and they were still in existence then. we all talked about how much manhattan has changed and he admitted that he rarely goes there any more, adding "I was down on st. marks a while ago, and I didn't like it." tiffany chimed in that she too is quite attached to brooklyn, and hardly knows manhattan at all. me- I like them both- but I love living in our fair borough.

so anyways...here are some pics from yesterday's trunk show at the fabulous old hollywood- that's shop owner tiffany porter in the vintage red skirt! it was so much fun spending the afternoon there in greenpoint. thanks to everyone who stopped by and those who went home with a few treats. through the day I'll be updating the website with new inventory. I have an idea for a little site tweak that involves new shop sections. stay tuned.

a little love

the sweetest of romantic necklaces are now available in the molliedash shop. all made from reclaimed and repurposed vintage and thrifted materials. coming next to the site: new key chains, including some valentine styles. my favorite thing about this collection is that hearts are in style all year long.
